James T. Hamilton, Hearst Professor of Communication and director of the Journalism Program at Stanford University, is the author of “All the News That’s Fit to Sell: How the Market Turns Information into News” (Princeton University Press, 2006) and co-founder of the Stanford Computational Journalism Lab. This article is based on his forthcoming book, “Democracy’s Detectives: The Economics of Investigative Journalism,” published in October 2016 by Harvard University Press.
