Richard Read, a 1997 Nieman Fellow, is the Seattle bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, covering Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. He spent much of his career as a writer and foreign correspondent for The Oregonian, where in 1999 he won Pulitzer Prize for a series that explained the Asian financial crisis by following French fries from a Pacific Northwest farm to a Singapore McDonald’s.
